Simple Description:
The objective of this course is to give an advanced introduction to the principles and applications of database system. The content can be separated into two parts: database applications, and principles of database management system (DBMS). The first part covers the topics involved with Entity-Relationship model, relational data model, relational standard language SQL, and database design. The second part introduces the principles and implementation techniques of DBMS, including data storage, index structure, query processing and optimization, database security, concurrency and recovery. In addition, this course will outline advanced database systems and some emerging database applications. You are expected to learn the design of DBMS through a project “MiniSQL” and to get some practical experience with commercial database management systems by using SQL.
