Three orientations are offered namely computer science and technology, artificial intelligence and information security.

Computer science and technology hails from professional teaching of computer back in 1960. The Department of Computer was opened in 1978. In 1998, the major of computer science and technology was launched. It was listed among the country’s first-class featured discipline in 2007. In 2017, it knocked into dual first-rated discipline by the Ministry of Education and was given A+ for first-level discipline on computer science and technology in discipline appraisal by the Ministry of Education.

Zhejiang University opened the orientation on artificial intelligence in 1978. When building the Department of Computer, Zhejiang University, Mr. He Zhijun was clear-cut in taking ‘research of AI theories and designing of new model of computers’ as its No. One research aim and in taking initiatives to reclaim the virgin land of AI in China. In 1982, AI studio was set up. In 1987, it was elevated to AI Research Institute. After years-long development and fusion, Zhejiang University has grabbed ample scientific research attainments with profound teaching body on artificial intelligence. It has five cultivation directions covering cognitive mechanism, AI theories and so on. In 2018, AI Synergy Innovation Center under the Ministry of Education was opened. In 2019, the Department of Artificial Intelligence began to enroll undergraduate students.

The orientation of information security was set up in September, 2012. In 2016, Zhejiang University was among the first batch to be conferred degree for doctorate and postgraduate students on cyberspace security. In September of the same year, the Department of Information Security was opened and began to enroll undergraduate students. In September, 2017, Research Center for Cyberspace Security in Zhejiang University was officially established. In July, 2018, Professor Whitfield Diffie, winner of Turing Award, became director of honor in the Research Center for Cyberspace Security. In April, 2019, the School of Cyber Science and Technology was officially opened. The discipline of cyberspace security was also conferred one of the seven advantageous disciplines in Zhejiang University.
