Professional Advantages

Professional Ranking. According to the results of the fourth round of subject evaluations by the Ministry of Education, among 168 universities in China that offer computer majors, the top 4 are Peking University, Tsinghua University, Zhejiang University, and the National University of Defense Technology, all of which are in the top tier of computer majors in China. Zhejiang University's computer science and technology and software engineering have been selected as Double First-Class disciplines and are both rated as A+ disciplines.

Academic Masters. The Turing Class implements a one-on-one mentorship program led by a team of professional mentors, including Turing Award winners such as Professor Whitfield Diffie, Academician Wu Chaohui, Academician Chen Chun, and Academician Pan Yunhe. In the first year of enrollment, the homeroom teacher and academic development mentor are responsible for guiding the students, and the homeroom teachers are all leaders of research teams. Starting from the second year, students are free to choose their own professional research mentors and have the right to choose to change mentors at any time. The Turing Class adopts a separate training model, and in addition to having the best teaching team in the Computer School of Zhejiang University, it will also hire teaching masters and research leaders from top foreign universities to give lectures.

Curriculum Design. The Turing Class will strengthen general education in the first two years of student enrollment, so that students have a solid theoretical foundation in computer science, artificial intelligence, information security, mathematics, physics, and other areas. In the next two years, the professional education will cover a wide range of seminar-style courses, enabling students to have excellent research and innovative learning abilities.

Overseas Exchange. The Turing Class will establish a comprehensive and multi-level international academic exchange platform, establish a long-term joint training mechanism with overseas universities, and study abroad at top universities such as UC Berkeley, MIT, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, as well as well-known research institutions such as MSRA, Google, and Baidu for more than three months. This will provide students with the opportunity to cooperate and intern at international top academic and research institutions. Full funding will be provided for students who have published papers at top academic conferences to attend conferences and give presentations abroad. International teaching staff will be introduced to participate in curriculum planning, all-English teaching, and research training, which will help students adapt to international teaching modes and cultivate their international thinking.

Geographic Location. Zhejiang University is located in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, China. Hangzhou is not only a city with a rich historical and cultural heritage and beautiful natural scenery, but also a global hub of innovation and entrepreneurship, with globally influential companies such as Alibaba, Hikvision, and NetEase. Hangzhou has world-leading advantages in information technology such as the internet, big data, cloud computing, and artificial intelligence, and is expected to become the leading city in China's digital economy.

Zhejiang University. Zhejiang University (ZJU) is a distinctive, comprehensive, research-oriented, and innovative university with a significant influence both domestically and internationally. Its academic disciplines cover 12 categories, including philosophy, economics, law, education, literature, history, art, science, engineering, agriculture, medicine, and management. The university consists of seven schools, 36 professional colleges/departments, one engineering college, two Sino-foreign cooperative schools, and seven affiliated hospitals. ZJU has seven campuses, including Zijingang, Yuquan, Xixi, Huajiachi, Zhejiang University International Campus, Zhoushan Campus, and Haining International Campus. The university has 8,657 faculty and staff, including 3,611 full-time teachers. Among the faculty, there are 21 members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 20 members of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, nine senior humanities professors, 101 awardees of the Ministry of Education's Changjiang Scholars Program (including young scholars), and 129 recipients of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars. ZJU is among the top universities in China selected for the Double First-Class initiative, with 18 disciplines recognized as first-class disciplines, ranking third among all universities in China. According to data from ESI (Essential Science Indicators), as of March 2018, ZJU has 18 disciplines ranked among the top 1% in the world, seven disciplines in the top 100, ranking second among all universities in China; eight disciplines are in the top 1‰, five disciplines in the top 50, ranking first among all universities in China.

In its long history of education, ZJU has nurtured a large number of outstanding talents with its rigorous academic style and has created fruitful results with its persistent innovative spirit, making a name for itself both domestically and internationally and being known as the Oriental Cambridge. Famous scholars such as Zhu Kezhen, Ma Yinchu, Lu Jiaxi, Su Buqing, Qian Sanqiang, Wang Ganchang, Bei Shizhang, Chen Jiangong, Qian Lingxi, Tan Jiazhen, Gu Chaohao, Zheng Xiaocang, Liang Shoupan, Xia Chengtao, Jiang Liangfu, Li Zhengdao, Wu Jianxiong, Lu Yongxiang, and Pan Yunhe have worked or studied at the university. More than 160 ZJU alumni have been elected to the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering. The Artificial Intelligence Research Institute under the School of Computer Science and Technology is one of the earliest established AI research institutions in China, with its first director being the famous computer scientist and pioneer of Chinese artificial intelligence research, He Zhijun.

Campus Environment. ZJU's Turing Class first- and second-year students will study at the Zijingang Campus, while third- and fourth-year students will study at the Yuquan Campus. Both campuses have dedicated classrooms for the Turing Class. The Zijingang Campus is adjacent to the Xixi Scenic Area, with a total planning area of over 5,000 acres, and is a modern, networked, garden-style, and ecological university campus. The Yuquan Campus is located in the northwest corner of West Lake, adjacent to the Hangzhou Botanical Garden, covering over 1,700 acres. The environment is elegant, with ancient trees towering, complementing the beautiful scenery of West Lake, making it an ideal place for studying and learning.

A Story obout the Discipline

In 1936, a young scientist only 24 years old published a paper "On Computable Numbers, with an Application to the Entscheidungsproblem", introducing for the first time the concept of a "Turing machine", which became the cornerstone of computer theory. Three years later, due to the outbreak of WWII, he was recruited by the British Foreign Office to work in their communications department, and used his mathematical talents to crack the supposedly "unbreakable" Enigma cipher used by the German military, saving 20 million lives and shortening the duration of the war by two years, and receiving the highest honor from the British government, the Order of the British Empire. In 1950, he posed the scientific question "Can machines think?" and predicted the possibility of creating machines with true intelligence, earning him the title "Father of Artificial Intelligence". He is Alan Turing, also known as the "Father of Computer Science", the founder of modern computer science. The Turing Award, named in his honor, is the highest honor in the field of computer science, often referred to as the "Nobel Prize of Computing".

Today, Zhejiang University has established the Turing Class, which is led by a team of mentors including Turing Award winners, members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and provides comprehensive guidance on a one-on-one basis. The class also offers access to high-quality resources for computer science and technology, artificial intelligence, information security, and other related fields, as well as exchange and collaboration platforms with top international academic and research institutions. Various high-level events such as seminars, workshops, and exchange meetings provide opportunities to showcase talent. The goal is to stand on the shoulders of giants, see further, and soar higher, so that Zhejiang University shines with your brilliance, China takes pride in your achievements, and the world is amazed by your accomplishments.
