Presentation of the lecturer
Dr. Jean-Marc Desharnais have been working in the computer and software engineering fields for 35 years, as an analyst and project manager at the start of my career, and, most recently, as a software engineering consultant. Since 1987, his expertise was mainly in software engineering domain, more specifically project management and software measures for business applications. He also developed academic expertise in cognitive science and had more than a hundred publications and presentations around the world. He starts his career in public administration (software analyst), then move as a consultant in software engineering. He was also, for ten years, the owner of a small enterprise (Software Engineering Laboratories in Applied Metrics) that has contracts around the world in measurement (Canada, US, Australia, New Zealand, France, Belgium, Spain, etc.) He is currently working as a professor in an engineering school in Montréal (Software Engineering Department).
Dr Desharnais has a Ph.D. in Cognitive Science, a master in Business Computing and a master in Public Administration. He also has three undergraduates diploma.
Summary of the presentation
Title: Software Engineering at ÉTS (École de Technologie Supérieure)
The department of Software Engineering was created officially in June 2004. Before it was a part of the Electrical Engineering department. Software Engineering is defined as the design, development and documentation of software while computer science is the study of computer technology, including hardware and software. There is still a debate today about the meaning of engineering with the word of software.
At University level the undergraduate and graduate body of knowledge were defined only recently with the industry, a standard organization (IEEE) and academic personnel. The result is a document recently recognized as a IEEE and ISO standard (SoftWare Engineering BOdy of Knowledge SWEBOK). We were guided by this standard to develop our courses.
What do we expect from a software engineer student? At ÉTS the license in software engineering aims to train engineers ready to design products and systems according to engineering principles. For this purpose we developed a number of courses that cover different subjects like software development, software quality assurance, human machine interface design, requirements analysis, quality control and measures, database design, etc. There is also teaching in Information Technology (IT). For this purpose we developed a number of courses that cover different subjects like multimedia data structures, digital image processing and generation, multimedia databases, multimedia Internet systems, electronic commerce, network management, etc.
