Graduate Studies in Computing Science at Simon Fraser University
We are seeking outstanding candidates into our graduate program! The School of Computing Science offers a versatile and stimulating program of studies and research in some of the most dynamic areas of computing science. Our standard of quality is among the most competitive, and we provide an excellent work environment along with a dynamic and research-conducive atmosphere. At present, there are about 185 registered graduate students in our program (approximately one third of the students pursue a Ph.D.) being supervised by about 50 faculty members.
Research Strength
Our school covers a broad spectrum of research activities and areas. Graduate students are actively engaged with faculty in Research Programs that often crosses traditional faculty boundaries. The School's research has gained a reputation of excellence worldwide, with ongoing collaborations in the Americas, Europe, Asia, and Australia. The program has also maintained strong research ties with many industries and several government agencies. We also carry out research in affiliation with the Pacific Institute for the Mathematical Sciences and the National Network of Centres of Excellence. The strength and expertise of our research lies in the following major areas:
・ Algorithms and Complexity Theory
・ Artificial Intelligence
・ Data management, Analysis and Bioinformatics
・ Graphics, Human Computer Interaction, Vision, and Visualization
・ Networks and Distributed Systems
Financial Support
The School of Computing Science provides generous support for its graduate students. The support will be a combination of scholarships, fellowships, teaching assistantships, research assistantships, and sessional appointments.
Applicants who hold NSERC scholarships can expect competitive top-ups.
・ All PhD students in good standing will be supported for a minimum of four years (at least $19,000 per year).
・ All MSc students in good standing will be supported for a minimum of two years (at least $16,500 per year).
Non-CS Majors
For applicants who do not have first degree in computing, we require demonstrated competence in computing science at the third year level. While we have many applicants for each available place in our graduate program, we are enthusiastic about recruiting exceptional students. We take our graduate program seriously and believe that you will find our School an exciting and enjoyable place to work.
Deadlines
The deadlines for receipt of completed applications (including all supporting documentation) are February 1 for the Fall semester, and August 1 for the Spring semester. International students should note that the deadlines do not include the time needed to obtain a student visa and the delay in some countries can be several months.
