Title: BuyAns.COM Incentive Models and Technologies for Web 2.0 and
Beyond

Speaker: Liu Wenyin

Dept of Computer Science, City University of Hong Kong

Abstract

The basic feature of Web 2.0 is to harnesses collective intelligence from
all users and trusts them as developers to gradually provide with richer and
richer content. However, there is still no clear earning models for Web 2.0
even though the main concept was formed three years ago. In addition, the
content provided by the general public users cannot be fully reliable.

In this talk, we will explore several possible business models and
technologies for Web 2.0 and use http://www.BuyAns.com as
an example, which is incentive and collaborative platform for all users to
interactively ask and answer. It is exactly a Web 2.0 application but
features several innovations: a rewarding scheme for answering questions
among all users; a pattern-based UI for questioning and answering; and a
pattern-based representation and storage scheme for accumulated knowledge in
terms of pattern-based question-answer pairs. It actually proposes and
promotes a C2C business model for exchanging and commercializing knowledge
from ordinary people. It can also be used as an incentive and collaborative
approach to knowledge acquisition. Driven by the business model, prompt and
quality answers will be quickly accumulated, and as more knowledge is
accumulated, more accurate automatic question-answering is possible.
Facilitating features and technologies, including user modeling, reputation
management, and answer quality assessment, clustering and fusion, are also
developed and briefly described. Preliminary user studies show its potential
attraction to users as well as reasonable usability and user-satisfaction.
We anticipate it will become a flagship application in the Web 2.0 era.
