Title: Energy-Conserving Quality-Aware Data Collection in Wireless Sensor Networks

Abstract:
Energy efficiency is a critical consideration in the design of a wireless sensor network. In this talk, we present our recent research efforts on precision-constrained data collection in wireless sensor networks. The objective is to exploit the trade-off between data quality and communication cost to extend network lifetime. Both one-shot queries and continuous queries are studied. We propose a two-tier data collection architecture in support of various types of one-shot queries. Under this architecture, strategies for query processing and the issue of optimal precision setting are examined. We also extend our research to the more complex and challenging continuous aggregate queries, where the precision constraint of data aggregation is partitioned and distributed to the sensor nodes involved. Biography:
Jianliang Xu received his BEng degree in computer science and engineering from Zhejiang University in 1998, and his PhD degree in computer science from Hong Kong University of Science and Technology in 2002. He is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science at Hong Kong Baptist University. His research interests include mobile and pervasive computing, wireless sensor networks, and distributed systems, with an emphasis on data management. He has published over 50 technical papers in these areas, many in prestigious journals and conferences, including ACM SIGMOD, ACM/USENIX MobiSys, IEEE ICDE, INFOCOM, TKDE, TPDS, TMM, TC, JSAC, and VLDBJ. He is a co-editor of a book entitled “Web Content Delivery” published by Springer. He has also served as a session chair and program committee member for many international conferences, including IEEE INFOCOM, IEEE MDM,
and ACM SAC. He is a program committee co-chair of International Workshop on Peer-to-Peer Information Management (P2PIM'06).
徐建良毕业于浙江大学计算机系。之后保送到香港科技大学计算机系读研，并于2002年取得博士学位。现为香港浸会大学计算机系助理教授。曾在美国宾西法尼亚州立大学访问研究。近期主要研究兴趣为移动网络、传感器网络、因特网等分布式系统中的数据管理。先后在这些领域发表学术论文50余篇，其中不少刊登在TKDE、TPDS、TMM、TC、JSAC等IEEE权威期刊以及ACM SIGMOD、ACM/USENIX MobiSys、IEEE ICDE、IEEE INFOCOM等一流国际会议。主持或参与过多项香港研究资助局(RGC)项目。曾应邀担任重要国际会议如IEEE INFOCOM、IEEE MDM, ACM SAC等的程序委员会委员。
