关于图灵奖得主、CMU大学Raj Reddy教授讲座的通知

  Raj Reddy简介:

  Raj Reddy教授是国际著名的人工智能专家,任卡内基梅隆大学西海岸分校校长、美国工程院院士、美国艺术和科学院院士、微软亚洲研究院顾问委员会委员等职。
  1994年Raj Reddy与Feigenbaum一起被授予图灵奖以表彰其在设计与构建大规模人工智能系统的先驱性的贡献,展现了人工智能技术在实际应用中的重要性和潜在的商业影响。Reddy与同年获奖的Feigenbaum(费根鲍姆)是大规模人工智能系统的设计和实现的先驱。他们合力开发了第一个专家系统DENDRAL。
  Reddy于1958年从印度现在的Anna University(www.annauniv.edu/ )工程学院获得其学术学位。然后在澳大利亚的University of New South Wales(www.unsw.edu.au/ )完成了其土木工程的硕士学位。1956年,Reddy毕业于斯坦福大学计算机系并获得其博士学位。他是图灵奖获得者,人工智能领域先驱John McCarthy指导的第一个博士。
  Reddy目前是CMU计算机系的终身教授。在CMU其间,Reddy创办了多个研究所,其中包括:机器人研究所,电子商务技术研究所和软件研究研究所。Reddy在CMU其间指导了许多博士生,其中包括目前Google Inc.副总裁,中国区总经理李开复。

  学术讲座题目:The Role of Robotics and Intelligent Systems in Developing Economies
  讲座内容介绍: A grand challenge for Information Technologies in Developing Economies is improving the quality of life of the 4 billion people at the bottom of the pyramid who subsist on less than $2000 per year income. One critical component of improving the quality of life is access to information and knowledge that is helpful for education, healthcare, food and agriculture in rural communities. This talk will review why the world's poor have more to gain in relative terms by the effective use of the IT and AI technology and review the barriers that make it difficult to realize the potential benefits. The challenges are even more acute in a polyglot nation like India with 21 official languages and where nearly 40% of the population cannot read or write. It is not enough to overcome basic technical challenges of connectivity divide and computer access divide - we have to deal with literacy divide and language divide issues also. This talk will discuss the unfinished research agenda of AI problems of spoken language understanding, dialog modeling, multimedia synthesis and language generation, multi-lingual indexing and retrieval, language translation, and summarization.
