Managing Privacy in Distributed Data Mining - A Semantic Workflow Approach"
Dr. William K. Cheung
Hong Kong Baptist University
Abstract:
While data analysis tools has widely been used in discovering patterns from large data sets, the ubiquity of computing has challenged the centralized data analysis approach in many aspects. Data privacy protection, being one of the challenges, has been found to be especially important for applications like e-Science and e-Business. In this talk, we first give a brief review on recent work related to privacy preserving data mining and privacy governing data mining. Then, we describe a semantic approach which (1) models data mining processes as workflows, (2) uses data privacy and data analysis ontologies to represent related workflows and use rules to represent privacy policies, and (3) performs automatic reasoning to validate workflows for policy compliance. We also discuss a case study on applying the approach to a distributed data clustering scenario as well as related research challenges. This work is being done during a sabbatical at Information Sciences Institute, University of Southern California in 2007 and is in collaboration with Yolanda Gil.
Biography:
William K. Cheung is an associate professor in the Department of Computer Science at Hong Kong Baptist University. He received his Ph.D. in computer science in 1999 from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, and his M.Phil and B.Sc. degrees both in electronic engineering from The Chinese University of Hong Kong. He has served as co-chair and program committee member of a number of international conferences as well as journals' guest editors on areas including artificial intelligence, Web intelligence, data mining, Web services, and e-commerce technologies. Also, he has been on the editorial board of IEEE Intelligent Informatics Bulletin since 2002. His research interests include artificial intelligence and machine learning as well as their applications to collaborative filtering, data mining, planning under uncertainty, and Web/grid service management.
